| A man has been arrested after crashing his sport utility vehicle on Lynn Garden Drive.
On September 4, 2013 at approximately 11:00 AM, Kingsport Police Traffic Unit Officer Dustin Jackson responded to a single vehicle crash on Mullins Street at the intersection of Lynn Garden Drive. His investigation revealed the following: A 1996 maroon Ford Explorer was travelling westbound on Mullins Street down a grade toward Lynn Garden Drive. The vehicle was driven by Andrew Johnson and occupied by his wife and four children. By Mr. Johnson’s own admission and confirmed by Officer Jackson’s inspection, the vehicle had defective brakes. When Mr. Johnson applied the brakes in an attempt to stop at the intersection with Lynn Garden Drive, the brakes failed and the vehicle continued onto Lynn Garden Drive. Mr. Johnson’s vehicle crossed all five lanes (four travel lanes and the center turn lane) and struck the curb on the opposite side of Lynn Garden Drive. The Explorer overrode the curb, and made a sharp right turn onto Glen Avenue, causing the vehicle to flip onto its top into a fence at 1220 Lynn Garden Drive. Mr. Johnson’s wife and one of his children were wearing seatbelts; however, neither Mr. Johnson nor any of the other three children were properly restrained. All six occupants of the vehicle received non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Holston Valley Medical Center Emergency Room by Sullivan County E.M.S. for treatment. After Mr. Johnson was treated for a laceration on his forehead, he was arrested and transported to the Kingsport City Jail. He was charged with: 1) Driving on Suspended License 2) Violation of Minimum Brake Requirements 3) Violation of Seatbelt Law as Driver 4) Violation of Child Restraint Law (3 Counts) 5) Failure to Comply with Financial Responsibility Law (No Insurance) Mr. Johnson’s wife and children were treated for their injuries and released. Through a donation program, Holston Valley Medical Center was able to furnish the Johnson’s with appropriate child passenger safety seats for each child to ensure compliance with the law and help keep the children safer in the future.
