SUBJECT: Wanted Fugitive Captured After Ramming U.S. Marshals Service Vehicle in Kingsport
DATE: July 22, 2016
CASE #: 16-015433 (Incident Report)

16-015435 (Crash Report)
On July 22, 2016 at approximately 10:30 AM, Kingsport Central Dispatch was contacted by the Smoky Mountain Fugitive Task Force of the United States Marshals Service advising that two Deputy U.S. Marshals were traveling along East Center Street, following a white GMC pickup truck driven by a wanted fugitive. They requested K.P.D. assistance in stopping the vehicle and apprehending the fugitive.

Prior to K.P.D. arrival, a Sullivan County Constable intercepted the suspect vehicle on Wateree Street and attempted a traffic stop. The fugitive refused to stop and a brief pursuit ensued. The Deputy U.S. Marshals pulled alongside the suspect, identified themselves as Federal Law Enforcement Officials, and ordered him to stop. The suspect then deliberately swerved left and rammed the Marshals’ vehicle.

As a result of the impact, the suspect lost control of his pickup and crashed into two parked cars before coming to a rest against the curb. He was promptly taken into custody by the Deputy U.S. Marshals. The suspect was positively identified as Marshall G. Jones. Mr. Jones was wanted on an outstanding Virginia State Police warrant for Assault on a Law Enforcement Official from March 2016.

Mr. Jones is also a convicted sex offender and is on both the National and Utah Sex Offender Registries as the result of a 1989 case involving Aggravated Sexual Assault and Kidnapping. He had crossed state lines in violation of the registry, leading to the involvement of the United States Marshals Service in his apprehension.

The Kingsport Police Department took custody of Mr. Jones, charging him with two new counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Official as well as Felony Evading Arrest. He was confined in the Kingsport City Jail and held without bond as ordered by the presiding Judge.

The apprehension of Mr. Jones was a cooperative effort by multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies that ultimately resulted in the removal of a violent felon from our streets.

For additional information regarding Mr. Jones’ pre-existing warrant for Assault on a Law Enforcement Official, please contact the Virginia State Police.
