Kingsport to hold Arbor Day Celebration today at Jefferson Elementary School
KINGSPORT ‚¬ Mayor Dennis Phillips will present a proclamation at noon on Friday, March 1, 2013 declaring Arbor Day in Kingsport at Jefferson Elementary School, with the City also to be recognized as a Tree City USA for the 27th consecutive year.
At the ceremony, the Tennessee Division of Forestry will present a Tree City USA flag and recognize Kingsport as a Tree City USA participant for the 27th consecutive year. The Tree City program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
To receive this award, Kingsport has met the four standards of the Tree City USA program; maintaining a tree board or department, adopting a tree care ordinance, continuing a community forestry program, and holding an annual Arbor Day observance.
This years celebration will also include a presentation of the Notable Trees of Kingsport, sponsored by Domtar.‚ The Notable Tree Program is Kingsports way to recognize and thank residents who maintain and preserve special trees within the city limits of Kingsport.‚ Notable Trees are selected based on size and condition, historical interest, or special significance to a particular area of Kingsport.
The Arbor Day Celebration is made possible through a partnership between the City of Kingsport, Domtar, Keep Kingsport Beautiful, and the Kingsport Tree Advisory Board.
