Highlights: Paul Lewis, Director of UT Knoxvilles Space Science Outreach and Solar System Ambassador for NASA, will report on how our understanding of the sun has changed based on our changing technology.
Bays Mountain Astronomy Club members will also be providing a number of fascinating presentations. Learn about telescopes and more! The club will also be hosting daytime viewing of the sun and nighttime viewing of Venus, Mars, Saturn, the moon, and much more!

Afternoon Events: 12 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Displays (free!): 12 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., Discovery Theater. See many displays featuring all sorts of astronomical topics.
All About the Sun with Sabrina Hurlock (free!): 1:30 p.m., Discovery Theater.‚ Learn all about the sun. Find out why its so important and what we can learn about our nearest star.
Solar Viewing (free!): 2 p.m. – 4 p.m., Observatory. Thrill at viewing different layers of the sun up close and in great detail. Safely see sunspots and prominences. Weather dependent. Entry Level Modern, Computerized
Telescopes with Bob Smith (free!): 2:30 p.m., Discovery Theater. Have you ever wondered about those new types of telescopes you have seen in the stores or in ads? Look no further and attend this informative presentation on what those telescopes are like and how to use them.
Solar System Walk with Robin Byrne (free!): 3 p.m., Observatory Grounds (only if not raining). This fun outdoor excursion shows just how large the Solar System really is. Learn about the planets and their diversity with this cool activity for the whole family.
Amateur Astronomy: Then & Now. Easier than Ever with Mark Marquette (free!): 3:30 p.m., Discovery Theater. See how far amateur astronomy has come in the past forty years. Amazing technology has allowed us to easily find objects in the sky or take photographs that would have been the envy of major observatories.
Evening Events: 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Here Comes the Sun with Paul Lewis (free!): 7 p.m. – 8 p.m., Amphitheater (Planetarium if raining). See how our understanding of the sun has changed with advancements in technology. Paul Lewis is the director of astronomy outreach at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a Solar System ambassador for NASA. A must-see for the entire family!
Nighttime Viewing (free!): 8:30 p.m. – 10 p.m., Observatory. Spectacular views of celestial delights await you. Savor the almost edge-on view of Saturns rings, be awe-struck by the distance to galaxies, and feel like youre flying low over the moon with the Bays Mountain Astronomy Clubs telescopes. These views and more will be seen at our Observatory. A live presentation about what is up in the night sky will take place in the Planetarium if the weather does not cooperate.
