Many City Services delay opening until after lunch given winter weather conditions

KINGSPORT – Heavy snowfall has prompted the closure of the Kingsport Area Transit System for Tuesday, February 24, 2014, given snow covered road conditions.

The Aquatic Center, Public Library, Renaissance Center, Senior Center, Bays Mountain Park, and Parks and Recreation facilities will not open until 1 p.m., and then only as conditions permit.

Streets & Sanitation Manager Ronnie Hammonds said most streets are slick and snow covered as of 8:30 a.m.

“All road crews, about 60 people, are out plowing main roads or otherwise supporting snow clearing operations, but most roads remain snow covered,” Hammonds said. “Work on neighborhood streets cannot begin until all main routes are clear, so we’ll be working at this for some time. We ask that those who must travel due so with great caution, and if it’s at all possible, its best to stay off the roads for the time being.”

As a result, all garbage, trash and recycling collection are temporarily suspended, with those personnel assisting snow clearing operations.

Currently, all routes will be collected on a shifted basis, with today’s routes collected Wednesday and so forth, but this is dependent on road conditions moving forward.

Hammonds noted that if extra garbage cannot fit inside the provided container, any extra garbage can be placed beside the cans next weeks.
