Local First Responders Activated to Assist Relief Efforts in South Carolina

KINGSPORT – Members of Kingsport Fire Department, Bristol TN Fire Department, and Washington County EMS have been activated through an Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) request by the Tennessee Dist. 1 of Homeland Security. ‚ EMAC offers assistance during governor-declared states of emergency through a responsive, straightforward system that allows states to send personnel, equipment, and commodities to help disaster relief efforts in other states.

Six members of Kingsport Fire, three from Bristol Fire, and six from Washington County EMS will be part of an eighty member team response from Tennessee. This is the second wave of Tennessee responders to travel to South Carolina for this disaster.

The team will be headed to the Columbia, SC area to support local and national relief efforts. The teams are expecting to work 12-16 hour days and may be deployed for the next week and a half.

The last activation of this team was in response to the tornados in Greene County in 2011.
