Kingsport Aquatic Center to host Model City Invitational

KINGSPORT – After a seven-year hiatus, the Bank of Tennessee Model City Invitational will make its triumphant return to Kingsport in the new, state-of-the art Kingsport Aquatic Center. On Friday June 13, Saturday, June 14 and Sunday June 15, Kingsport will host more than 300 swimmers and their families. Visitors will be coming from Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and Tennessee to take part in the elite competition.

The first Model City Invitational took place in Kingsport in 1959 and ran annually through 2006. During its nearly 50-year history, the event established a reputation as one of the premier summer meets in the region. Now, the Barracuda Swim Club of Northeast Tennessee will re-establish this long-standing tradition. The Kingsport Aquatic Centers Director Kari Matheney says, It is a great opportunity to showcase our HMG Competition Pool, an Olympic-sized, indoor 50-meter pool. Were happy to be able to host this caliber of an event.

The head coach of the Barracuda Swim Club of Northeast Tennessee, Chris Coraggio, says hes thrilled to be able to get this meet back up and running, “This has historically been the premier summer meet for the region.‚  Our team had to stop hosting it when the old Legion Pool began to show its age. Now, with the availability of the new Holston Medical Group competition pool at the Kingsport Aquatic Center, and thanks to the sponsorship of Bank of Tennessee and the support of the City of Kingsport, we are excited to once again welcome swimmers to town for the event.‚  We expect to see some very fast swimming.”
