KINGSPORT ‚¬ Dobyns-Bennett High School has been named by The Daily Beast as one of Americas Top High Schools for a second year in a row.
Only 735 public high schools were included on The Daily Beast 2014 Top High Schools list out of more than 24,500 public high schools in the country. For the last two years, The Daily Beast considered the nations high schools that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready graduates. Each year, they have fine-tuned their methodology slightly, but stayed true to the following factors that have proven to be the best indicators of college readiness: graduation rates, rigor – participation in college-level classes and exams via Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, ACT/SAT scores, percentage of students with free/reduced lunch and acceptance into a two- or four-year college.
Dobyns-Bennett High School is ranked in the top three (3) percent (561) of all U.S. High Schools. D-B only administers AP tests and does not offer an IB program. Approximately 657 Advanced Placement tests were administered to D-B students in 2013. The number of seniors graduating from D-B in 2013 was 435.
77.1 percent of Dobyns-Bennett High School students who completed an AP test scored at least a three (3) or above. An AP exam score ranging from a three (3) to a five (5) qualifies students for college credit in the subject area.
We are extremely proud that Dobyns-Bennett has once again been recognized as one of Americas top high schools in the nation by The Daily Beast, said Dr. Lyle Ailshie, Kingsport City Schools Superintendent. I believe this recognition is a true testament of the hard work our students, faculty and staff put in year round. The Top High Schools listing demonstrates the importance of Advanced Placement classes in our schools, providing the opportunity for our students to have a world class education and college credit before college.
This is the ninth time D-B has been named to the Top High Schools List based on report findings. The lists were published in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013 by Newsweek Magazine and The Daily Beast. In 2014 The Daily Beast published their own listing. Twelve (12) Tennessee schools were ranked on the 2014 listing. Visit www.thedailybeast.com for a complete listing of the 735.
