Public Art: (ie: Sculpture Walk, Permanent Art, Banners, Gallery Exhbitions, Parking Garage Benches, Art in Public Spaces, etc)
Sculpture Walk General Description: Kingsport has had a ‘Percent for Art’ program since 2006 and the first expression of that Public Art Program was the Sculpture Walk which is still a vital part of Kingsport’s Public Art Program. The Sculpture Walk is a curated exhibit of contemporary public art located along Broad Street from the Train Station on Main Street to the Glenn Bruce Park near the Kingsport Public Library. The pieces are on exhibit 11 months of the year and then are changed for a new exhibit each May. With a comfortable stroll along Broad Street, a viewer can enjoy up to 10 temporary pieces and access information on each piece through the Guide By Cell feature of the walk. With a local call the viewer can hear general descriptions, curator’s comments and a message from the artist him/her self! Along the route the viewer can also see several pieces of Kingsport’s growing permanent public art collection. More information on all these programs is available at http://PublicArt.KingsportTN.gov or at www.EngageKingsport.com
Carousel Project:
Carousel Project: It started as one man’s dream to have a carousel for the Kingsport community. He talked a few fellow Kiwanis members into investigating the idea and the Four Horsemen took charge. Now Kingsport has a carousel carving studio at the Lynn View Community Center. During the week the carvers can be found working on their animals. Volunteer painters are also hard at work painting the hand-carved animals. Another set of volunteer painters have painted Kingsport scenes on Rounding Boards for the Carousel. Mechanics, merchants, fund raisers and enthusiasts are urged to get involved in this legacy project for Kingsport. The work continues until the 1956 vintage Herschell frame is in its own round house connected to the Farmers’ Market and all animals have a place on the carousel with children of all ages riding. Completion date is coming soon– there is a lot of work to be done and a great way to get to know great people! www.EngageKingsport.com
