NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: Trio of Pharmacy Burglars Incur a Litany of Charges
DATE: January 14, 2016
CASE #: 16-000808

16-000819

GENERAL NARRATIVE
On January 13, 2016 at approximately 5:00 AM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to an alarm at Cave’s Drug Store, located at 1328 South John B. Dennis Highway in Kingsport. Upon arrival, officers found a door that had been kicked in. With the assistance of K-9 Reko, the interior of the business was searched, but the suspects had already fled the scene. An employee of the business arrived and discovered that several prescription medications had been stolen during the burglary. Detectives responded to investigate.

Approximately three hours later, an alert Kingsport Police Patrol Officer observed a white sport utility vehicle run a stop sign from Berry Street onto North Eastman Road. The officer initiated a traffic stop and spoke with the driver, identified as Krystal R. Overbey. Two small children (ages 1 and 6 years old) were in the vehicle with her. Ms. Overbey appeared extremely groggy, was having trouble keeping her eyes open, and her speech was slurred. After performing poorly on a series of field sobriety tasks, she was placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence with Child Endangerment Enhancement and Running a Stop Sign.

Also in the vehicle with Ms. Overbey and the children were her husband, Matthew B. Overbey, and Haley D. Rice. Several bottles of prescription medications that were stolen during the burglary of Cave’s Drug Store were found in the vehicle as well. The location of the traffic stop is in close proximity to Dobyns Bennett High School. After further investigation by the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division, all three adults were positively connected to the earlier burglary.

In addition to Ms. Overbey’s D.U.I. and traffic violations, all three suspects were charged with Burglary, Felony Theft over $1,000, and Possession of Schedule II, III, and IV Drugs for Resale within 1,000 Feet of a School. Ms. Rice had initially lied to officers regarding her identity, using the name of another individual rather than her own, in a failed attempt to mislead them regarding her involvement in the burglary. She was also charged with False Reporting and Identity Theft. All three suspects were confined in the Kingsport City Jail pending arraignment.
