NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: Kingsport Police Continue Investigation into Fatal Interstate Motor Vehicle Crash
DATE: January 12, 2015
CASE #: 15-000211
GENERAL NARRATIVE
The Kingsport Police Department’s Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal interstate motor vehicle crash that occurred just before midnight on January 3, 2015. Investigators have been awaiting confirmation from the medical examiner’s office before releasing the identities of the two victims, and that report has now been submitted. The driver has been identified as Hubert Manning, 71 years of age, and the passenger has been identified as his wife, Marjorie A. Manning, 72 years of age.

On the evening of the crash the roadway surface was wet, and weather conditions included moderate to heavy rain. These factors may have contributed to the crash; however, investigators are still working to determine the exact circumstances that resulted in the vehicle leaving the roadway. The crash remains under investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit. Investigators are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have stopped to render aid to contact them at 423-224-2750.

As previously released:

On January 3, 2015 at approximately 11:45 PM, Kingsport Police Patrol and Traffic Units responded to Interstate 81 at mile marker 59.8 in reference to a fatal motor vehicle crash. Their initial investigation revealed that a white 1998 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle was northbound on Interstate 81 when for unknown reasons it left the right side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled a fair distance down an embankment where it struck two trees and burst into flames. The Kingsport Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze.

One individual, believed to be the driver, was killed in the crash. A second individual, believed to be the passenger, was critically injured and was initially transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County E.M.S. for treatment. However, shortly after arrival at the hospital, the second individual succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and died. Their identities are currently being withheld pending completion of the investigation and notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit. Investigators are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have stopped to render aid to please contact them as soon as possible at 423-224-2750.
