NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: K.P.D. Traffic Unit Investigating Fatal West Stone Drive Crash
DATE: September 12, 2016
CASE #: 16-019589
GENERAL NARRATIVE
On September 11, 2016 at approximately 10:45 PM, Officers of the Kingsport Police Department Patrol Division responded to a serious crash at the intersection of West Stone Drive and Clinchfield Street in Kingsport. Due to the severity of injuries sustained by those involved, the K.P.D. Traffic Unit was called to the scene to investigate. The ensuing investigation yielded the following:

A 2004 Nissan Murano sport utility vehicle was eastbound on West Stone Drive approaching the intersection of Clinchfield Street. The Nissan was driven by Derek Carlos Williams, and also occupied by front seat passenger, Sammie Jo Williams, and a 3 month old back seat passenger. The child was properly restrained in a child passenger safety seat; however, neither of the front seat passengers were wearing a seatbelt.

A 1999 Audi A6 4-door sedan, driven by a 17 year old female, was westbound on West Stone Drive at the intersection with Clinchfield Street in the left turn lane. The driver of the Audi failed to yield the right of way, passed through a red light, and turned into the path of the oncoming Nissan which resulted in a crash.

The 17 year old driver of the Audi sustained non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Williams and the 3 month old child also sustained non-life threatening injuries; however, Ms. Williams sustained life threatening injuries. All 4 individuals were transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County E.M.S.

The 17 year old driver of the Audi was treated and released, while Mr. Williams and the 3 month old child were treated and held overnight for observation. Unfortunately, however, on September 12, 2016 at 3:15 AM, Ms. Williams succumbed to her injuries and died.

This crash remains under investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit with charges pending.

The Kingsport Police Department continues to stress that wearing a seatbelt has been proven time and time again to make a significant difference in a motorist being seriously injured or killed in a crash versus literally walking away from the crash with minor injuries or completely unscathed.

The Kingsport Police Department encourages ALL occupants of ALL motor vehicles to wear their seatbelt ALL of the time. Not only is it the law, but more importantly, it might just save a life.
