NEWS RELEASE
SUBJECT: Child Seriously Injured When S.U.V. Rear-Ends Brush Truck
DATE: June 6, 2016
CASE #: 16-011903
GENERAL NARRATIVE
On June 6, 2016 at approximately 1:30 PM, a large GMC City of Kingsport Public Works “Brush Grabber” Truck was legally stopped in the far right eastbound traffic lane of West Stone Drive, approximately 300 feet west of Netherland Lane in Kingsport. The truck had flashing yellow cautionary lights on prominent display, and one Public Works employee was directing traffic around the truck, while the other employee was operating the brush collection boom to pick up debris.

Meanwhile, a gray 2004 GMC Yukon, driven by Loree L. Taylor, was eastbound in the same lane of West Stone Drive, approaching the stopped truck from behind. The Yukon rear-ended the stopped truck. Ms. Taylor stated that she never saw the truck, while an independent witness confirmed, reporting that the Yukon never slowed from its cruising speed prior to impact.

The Public Works employee who was operating the brush collection boom received minor injuries. Ms. Taylor reported possible injuries. A four year old child riding in the back seat of Ms. Taylor’s S.U.V. sustained serious injuries. Ms. Taylor and the child were both transported by Sullivan County E.M.S. to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment. The child has since been transferred to Niswonger Children’s Hospital in Johnson City.

This remains an open and active investigation by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit, and charges are pending.
