K.P.D. has responded to a fatal traffic crash on Interstate 26.
On December 23, 2013 at approximately 1:35 PM, Officers of the Kingsport Police Patrol and Traffic Units responded to Interstate 26 at mile marker 9 in reference to a fatal traffic crash. Their investigation revealed that a tractor trailer, driven by John D. Bailey, was westbound on Interstate 26 approaching mile marker 9. The driver stated that for unknown reasons his left front tire blew out causing him to lose control. The tractor trailer struck the guard rail, crossed the median, broke through the cable barrier and entered the eastbound lanes of I -26. A Kia 4-door sedan, driven by a 57 year old white/male, was eastbound on I-26 and was struck nearly head-on by the tractor trailer. The driver of the Kia was killed in the collision. His name will not be released at this time pending notification of next of kin. Mr. Bailey received non-incapacitating injuries and was transported to Indian Path Hospital for treatment. Certain lanes of I-26 remained closed until as late as 5:30 PM, but have since been reopened. The investigation is on-going by the K.P.D. Traffic Unit.
