| Two individuals have been arrested after fabricating a story of a robbery in an effort to cover up a shooting at their apartment.
On October 17, 2013 at approximately 11:15 PM, Kingsport Police Patrol Officers responded to the Holston Valley Medical Center Emergency Room in reference to a gunshot victim arriving there seeking treatment. Officers spoke with Katie Collins, who reported that she had been shot in her hip by an unknown suspect who allegedly tried to rob her while she was walking her dog in the vicinity of Cloud Apartments in Kingsport. K.P.D. Detectives responded and took over the investigation. Ms. Collins was treated for non-life threatening injuries and eventually released. The subsequent investigation revealed that the reported robbery never occurred. On the night she was shot, Ms. Collins was with her boyfriend, Dakota Dorton, at their residence at Cloud Apartments, 1209 Robertson Street, Apartment #33, in Kingsport. By his own admission, Mr. Dorton was playing with a revolver that he thought was unloaded. Mr. Dorton claimed he was joking and pointed the gun at Ms. Collins and pulled the trigger several times. The gun clicked several times but then fired due to a live round of ammunition inadvertently being left in the cylinder. Ms. Collins corroborated Mr. Dorton’s story and agreed that he was joking and did not intend to actually shoot her. The couple made up the cover story of the robbery in an effort to try to keep Mr. Dorton out of trouble for the shooting. On October 21, 2013 Katie Collins was arrested and charged with filing a false police report. Dakota Dorton was charged with reckless aggravated assault. At the time he was charged, Mr. Dorton was already incarcerated in the Kingsport City Jail being held as a fugitive from justice in relation to his involvement in a robbery in Scott County, VA.
