The Kingsport Police Department still has openings available in the upcoming class of the highly acclaimed Citizens Police Academy; however, the deadline to apply is rapidly approaching.
K.P.D.’s Citizens Academy is open to individuals 18 years of age or older who either reside or work within the city limits. The Academy is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 7, 2013. Classes will meet twice each week on Monday and Tuesday evenings for four consecutive weeks at 6:00 PM, with the final class being held on Tuesday, October 29, 2013. Each class will last approximately two to three hours. The Citizens Academy is not designed to prepare citizens to become police officers; however, it will give citizens a chance to walk a few steps in an officer’s shoes to get the feel of what it might be like to serve as a police officer and to better understand why officers do what they do. Citizens Academy classes include a mixture of classroom presentations, demonstrations, and hands on activities. Class topics include: 1) Introduction to K.P.D., Justice Center Tour 2) Collision and D.U.I. investigations 3) Crime Scene Investigations 4) E.O.D. (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) 5) The Police K-9 6) Traffic Stops and Building Searches 7) Defensive Tactics and the Use of Force 8) S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics) The deadline to submit an application will be Friday, September 13, 2013 at 5:00 PM. Anyone interested in participating in the Citizens Academy needs to submit a new application regardless of whether or not they have previously submitted an application.
