General Narrative |
| A vehicle and a bicycle collided at the intersection of a parking lot and a mobility path resulting in injuries to the cyclist.
On August 20, 2013 at 3:30 PM officers with the Kingsport Police Department responded to a motor vehicle collision at 400 Wilcox Drive (Eastman Toy F. Reid Employee Center). The collision involved a vehicle and a bicyclist. The investigation revealed that a 2006 Ford Five Hundred driven by Teresa Christian was stopped at the stop sign on the Private Drive preparing to make a right turn onto southbound South Wilcox Drive. Mrs. Christian stated that as she started to pull out, she did not see Richard Johnson traveling northbound on the mobility path on his bicycle. She pulled into the path of the Mr. Johnson causing him to fall off the bike into the roadway. Mr. Johnson was not wearing a safety helmet. He sustained non-life threatening head injuries and was subsequently transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by Sullivan County EMS for treatment. The investigation is ongoing by the Kingsport Police Department Traffic Unit. Had Mr. Johnson worn a helmet in this crash, his injuries would likely have been lessened or even non-existent. The Kingsport Police Department wishes to stress the importance of always wearing a protective helmet while riding a bicycle, whether on a roadway, on private property, on a mobility path, or even off-road.
