General Narrative

A man has been arrested by the Kingsport Police Department for aggravated assault stemming from a road rage incident.

On October 12, 2013 at approximately 6:30 PM, multiple K.P.D. Patrol and Traffic Unit Officers were at the intersection of West Stone Drive at C.E. Brooks Way investigating a serious traffic crash. Officers were directing traffic around the crash and detouring vehicles through the parking lot of Pizza Hut located at 4414 West Stone Drive.

During this traffic delay, one driver, identified as James Anthony Strong, became enraged at a motorist in front of him and began sounding his vehicle’s horn. Mr. Strong exited his vehicle and produced a metal baton (impact weapon) and advanced on foot toward the vehicle in front of him, exclaiming, “If you cut me off again, I’ll beat your [EXPLETIVE DELETED]!”

The motorist in front of Mr. Strong saw Mr. Strong aggressively marching toward him with the weapon and heard Mr. Strong’s threat. The motorist reasonably feared for his safety, and justifiably drew his own pistol, which he was legally carrying on his person with a handgun carry permit.

Fortunately, K.P.D. Officers were already on scene investigating the crash, quickly intervened, and arrested Mr. Strong for Aggravated Assault, before the situation further deteriorated. No one was injured in the incident.
