| Kingsport Police Detectives are seeking suspect information in a road rage incident that resulted initially in an incident of vandalism and ultimately in a hit and run crash.
On September 6, 2013 at approximately 8:45 PM, an individual was traveling southbound in the inside lane of North Eastman Road near Spring Street (in the vicinity of the Chop House restaurant) in his Ford Expedition sport utility vehicle. He reported to K.P.D. that the following occurred: Two motorcycles approached him from the rear and raced past him in the center turn lane. The motorcycles were described as sport/racing style bikes, one painted black with green flames and the other painted bright yellow. Shocked at their recklessness, he instinctively stuck his hand out of the window in an attempt to gesture that he could not believe what they had just done. He continued on at his current pace; however, the motorcyclists slowed down in a deliberate attempt to allow him to catch back up with them. Both motorcycles pulled alongside his vehicle. The rider of the black and green motorcycle reached out and punched the driver’s side rearview mirror of the S.U.V., causing both the glass and the plastic housing to shatter. When the rider punched the mirror, he lost control of his bike. The bike swerved into the door of the S.U.V. and then overturned. The motorcycle ricocheted off the front wheel of the S.U.V. sending the bike sliding across the roadway into the yellow motorcycle which was travelling beside it. The yellow bike also overturned and slid across the roadway. The driver of the S.U.V. immediately stopped and went back to check on the two motorcyclists. He observed the rider of the yellow bike get back on his motorcycle and ride away. He observed the rider of the black and green bike push his motorcycle into the parking lot of the Chop House restaurant, but he eventually lost sight of him. Several officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate either of the two motorcycles or riders. Shortly before the crash, Kingsport Central Dispatch had received a citizen complaint and issued an alert of motorcycles matching these descriptions travelling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic. A K.P.D. Patrol Officer actually observed the bikes traveling recklessly on East Stone Drive just prior to the incident. At the time of this observation the yellow bike was riding a wheelie at 60 miles per hour in a 45 mph speed zone. The Patrol Officer was unable to even attempt a traffic stop on the motorcyclists due to heavy traffic volume and their high rate of speed.
