| GENERAL NARRATIVE |
| On Friday evening, June 27, 2014, the Kingsport Police Department will be participating in the “Hands Across the Border” D.U.I. Sobriety Checkpoint Campaign, sponsored in part by the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office. This campaign will consist of multiple law enforcement agencies from Tennessee and Virginia working together in an ongoing effort to reduce the problem of Driving Under the Influence and related crashes.
The event will kick off at Higher Ground Baptist Church, located at 1625 Lynn Garden Drive in Kingsport, with a pre-checkpoint meeting from 9:30 PM until 10:30 PM. Representative from MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) as well as various D.U.I. victim activists will be in attendance. Personal testimonies will be shared regarding what victims and families must endure following D.U.I. related tragedies. Area media representatives are invited and encouraged to be in attendance. The multi-agency D.U.I. sobriety checkpoint will take place following the meeting from 11:00 PM until 1:00 AM. The Kingsport Police Department wishes to stress that Tennessee D.U.I. laws apply not just to alcohol, but to any substance that impairs, including illegal drugs, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, as well as prescription drugs, even if they are prescribed by a physician.
