NEWS RELEASE | ||||
SUBJECT: | K.P.D. to Begin Limited Staffing of Lynn Garden Police Substation | |||
DATE: | July 12, 2021 | |||
GENERAL NARRATIVE | ||||
Effective immediately, the Kingsport Police Department will begin limited staffing of the Lynn Garden Police Substation on two days each week during specified hours. K.P.D.’s Lynn Garden Police Substation is located along the right side of K.F.D. Fire Station #5, located at 1517 Lynn Garden Drive in Kingsport. While there has been a Police substation at this location for decades, this is the first time that it will be open to the public.
The hours of operation will be on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:00AM – 12:00 Noon and Wednesday and Friday afternoons from 3:00PM – 5:00PM. Meanwhile, the Substation itself has undergone a facelift to include new signage to help with visibility. The word “POLICE” has been added to the marquee adjacent to the road, and new signs have also been added on the door and near the entrance to include the new hours. “Our decision to begin staffing this Substation comes as a result of increased community concerns and our own observations regarding a high volume of police calls for service in this specific part of the city,” said Chief of Police Dale Phipps. “Our hope is that an increase in Police visibility in this particular area will serve as a crime deterrent and help reduce the high demand for police resources, while at the same time help the residents of the Lynn Garden Community feel a little bit safer.” The concept of the Lynn Garden Police Substation is for it to serve as a “Community Listening Post.” During the aforementioned hours of operation, the Substation will be staffed by a Patrol Watch Commander or other Police Department Supervisor, who will be available to take “walk-in” reports as well as listen to and help address complaints and concerns expressed by citizens of the Lynn Garden Community. While K.P.D. will maintain limited hours of operation at the Lynn Garden Police Substation, citizens can rest assured that the Police are still available to respond to their needs 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week, 365 days-a-year. Citizens can always feel free to come to the Justice Center, located at 200 Shelby Street in Downtown Kingsport, or call Kingsport Central Dispatch at 423-246-9111 (or 911 if an emergency) if they are ever in need of Police assistance. As indicated on one of the signs, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office will also have access to this Police Substation. Should a need arise for a S.C.S.O. Deputy or Supervisor to meet with a citizen in this part of Sullivan County, this could be accomplished at this location. Any inquiries involving the S.C.S.O. should be directed to that agency. Additional Police Substations are located at K.F.D. Fire Stations #6 (Colonial Heights), #7 (Rock Springs), and #8 (New Beason Well Road just off East Stone Drive); however, none of those Substations are currently open to the public. If this investment in the Lynn Garden Community proves successful, and overall Police Department staffing levels improve, K.P.D. will be open to considering opening of some of these other Police Substations to the public in the future. |
