Kingsport City Schools Receives Top Grades in Achievement on TN State Report Card
KINGSPORT – Kingsport City Schools has received high marks in academic achievement, scoring above the state average in all core subject areas on the Tennessee Department of Education 2011 Report Card.
The school system received straight As in student achievement for math, reading/language arts, social studies and science. This reflects an increase over last years scores of three As and one B. The system also received As in all writing categories.
We are pleased with the results of this years state report card, said Dr. Richard Kitzmiller, Superintendent of Schools. Our teachers and students continue to meet the challenges of the more rigorous curriculum and testing. We also realize that there is always room to grow, and we will continue to focus on improving our academic achievement so that all students are college- and career- ready upon graduation.
According to the report card results, the school systems student graduation rate of 92.7% continues to far exceed the state average. The state graduation rate average is 85.5%. In addition, the single and three-year average ACT scores for Kingsport City School students remained significantly above the state averages in all subject areas. D-Bs three year average ACT score of 22.1 was over 11% higher than the state average of 19.8.
System-wide value-added scores which measure academic growth from year-to-year continue to be an area of focus, according to KCS Director of Accountability Dory Creech. Especially noteworthy in this years results is the increase in value-added from a C in math in 2010 to an A in 2011. The expectations have been raised and our new state assessments are much more rigorous. I am very pleased with how our teachers and staff have taken on this challenge and worked to raise student academic growth.
An additional positive result from this years Report Card is the removal of John Sevier Middle School from the state Target list. Sevier Middle school had been targeted for improvement in the subgroup of students with disabilities in 2010, meaning that the students in this subgroup had performed below the AYP benchmark. With improvements in this years results, Sevier Middle School met all federal No Child Left Behind Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) requirements and is in Good Standing for 2011.
