KINGSPORT – Leaders, teachers, parents, and students of Kingsport City Schools, selected as one of the best three public school districts in Tennessee for growth in student achievement, will be in Nashville on Monday, October 28, where they hope to win top honors at the SCORE Prize event.
The SCORE Prize, sponsored by the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE), is the hallmark award for Tennessee public schools and districts that have made the greatest gains in student achievement. The prize will be awarded during an event that begins at 6 p.m., Oct. 28, at Laura Turner Concert Hall, Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. SCORE is an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan education advocacy and research institution that works collaboratively to support Tennessees work to prepare students for college and the workforce and was founded by Dr. Bill Frist, former U.S. Senate majority leader.
Kingsport City Schools will be represented by the Board of Education, district administrators, school principals and several school teachers. In addition, representatives from the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Alderman including, Mayor Dennis Phillips will be in attendance along with several representatives from local businesses and organizations.
Supporters from the community are encouraged to attend the SCORE Prize event to help cheer on Kingsport City Schools.
Being named a finalist for the top award given to a Tennessee school system is a great honor. It is pleasing to know that the great work being performed in schools each day by our teachers and other educators is recognized, said Dr. Lyle Ailshie, Kingsport City Schools Superintendent. Providing a world class educational program requires the support of our parents, City leaders, and community partners. Kingsport has high standards for its schools and educators, but also demonstrates a commitment to excellence by providing the necessary resources for success. In short, being named finalist for the SCORE Prize is the result of an entire city believing in what is possible for students and making it a reality. If able, all are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony, and if we are fortunate to win, it will be great to celebrate together.
Kingsport City Schools was selected as one of three finalists for the 2013 SCORE Prize based on data that included growth from the Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System and performance on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program. College-readiness data, such as ACT and graduation rates, were also considered.
Then a team compiled by SCORE visited the district to conduct interviews and observe first-hand how Kingsport City Schools has been improving academic achievement by students.
One of the most important components of the SCORE Prize is the responsibility to share the stories of success we find, said SCORE President and CEO Jamie Woodson. We want others involved in education to see examples of what is working and to be inspired by stories from Kingsport City Schools.
To help tell the story of Kingsport City Schools, a video crew from Nashville will visit the district next week to interview school leaders, teachers, parents, and students for a video that will be shown during the SCORE Prize event.
The 2013 SCORE Prize event, hosted by Frist, will include remarks from Gov. Bill Haslam plus a special performance by country music artist Jo Dee Messina. Tickets should be reserved at www.tnscore.org/scoreprize.
