Keep Kingsport Beautiful and Sullivan County Constables partner on new anti-litter program
KINGSPORT – Keep Kingsport Beautiful and the Sullivan County Constables have joined efforts to stop people from littering while in their vehicles.
Named 50 and Go, the program was introduced thanks to the leadership of State Representative Tony Shipley and his support of the Tennessee Litter Law, TCA title 39, Chapter 14, Part 5.
Constables will issue citations to any individual throwing litter from a vehicle. The litterer will be fined $50 if the litter amount is less than 5 pounds, and will avoid a court appearance and further costs. If the charge is disputed, the accused can face additional fines and possible further action.
To introduce the program to the area, a warning period will begin immediately and end June 1.
The 50 and Go program is an important effort to keep people from littering and to keep our community clean, said Andy King, Keep Kingsport Beautiful chair and general manager of the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center. Keep Kingsport Beautiful is most appreciative to Representative Tony Shipley and Sullivan County Mayor Steve Godsey for their support and leadership with this strong partnership.
Concerned citizens can also assist efforts of litter prevention by calling The Tennessee Department of Transportations litter hotline, 1-877-8LITTER, when a littering action from a vehicle on state roadways is witnessed. Visit www.tdot.state.tn.us/environment/beautification/litter.asp for additional information and/or to do an online report.
Constables operate as individual officers at no cost to the citizens or governments of the county. Constables provide their own uniforms, vehicles, fuel and equipment and stand ready to aid or assist all citizens and/or agencies within the county. Their mission is to provide additional law enforcement presence in the county and to assist and supplement the county sheriffs office and city police department.
