HMG and Healthy Kingsport Host Region’s First Walk with a Doc Program
KINGSPORT – Healthy Kingsport and Holston Medical Group will host the regions first Walk with a Doc program, a refreshing and rejuvenating walk with local family and sports medicine physician, Dr. Emily Campbell, at 10 a.m. April 18, as part of Healthy Week.
Healthy Week activities are designed to introduce area residents to Healthy Kingsport, a new organization dedicated to helping residents make positive changes when it comes to their health.
Walk with a Doc is a national, non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve the health and well-being of the country.
Walk with a Doc is honored to team up with Holston Medical Group. By incorporating Walk with a Doc, Holston Medical Group is demonstrating an exceptional level of caring and commitment to their community, said Dr. David Sabgir, founder of Walk with a Doc.
Dr. Emily Campbell, with HMG Primary Care and Sports Medicine, will lead the regions first Walk with a Doc. There is no charge for the event, and registration is not necessary. Participants should meet at 10 a.m. at the Kingsport Greenbelt entrance behind the HMG Medical Plaza building located at 105 W. Stone Drive.
During the walk, participants will learn how to Step your way to health: How to include physical activity in your day. Walkers will also have the chance to win an HMG Sports Medicine gift basket full of goodies and a FitBit Zip.
Why walk? Theres no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks or many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes. Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.
According to the American Heart Association, walking as little as 30 minutes a day can provide health benefits including improving blood pressure and blood sugar levels; helping‚ maintain a healthy body weight and lowering the risk of obesity; enhancing mental well-being; and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
Kingsport joins a growing list of communities nationwide that have created local Walk with a Doc programs. Walk with a Doc was created by Sabgir, a cardiologist who practices at Mount Carmel Health Systems in Columbus, Ohio. Walk with a Doc has more than 100 active programs across the country and around the world.
