The Kingsport Historical Society will hold its next program on August 21 at 10 a.m. in the Kingsport Higher Education Center’s main auditorium. The topic of this month’s program is “Kingsport’s Transportation Legacy and the 3 C’s.” The guest speaker will be Sandhi Kozsuch, a native of East Tennessee, who worked for 50 years in the television media industry, including stints at WJHL, WCYB and stations in Richmond, Va., New York City and Atlanta.
Kozsuch grew up on the ETSU campus where he learned about another old railroad grade that bisected the original “Teachers College.” From that start he developed a keen interest in the railroads of not only our area but all along the Atlantic Seaboard. The 3-C’s Railroad – the Charleston, Cincinnati & Chicago – captured his historical interest. The 3-C’s graded more than 300 miles of railroad right-of-way from South Carolina to the Ohio River in Kentucky. Kozsuch has carefully researched this vast doomed project which crossed the Appalachian mountains and bisected future downtown Kingsport late in the 19th century.
The program is free and open to the public, so bring a friend with you and enjoy a look back at this doomed railroad project from almost 140 years ago.
