KINGSPORT – In honor of National Water Safety month, the Kingsport Aquatic Center will host International Water Safety Day on Sunday, May 15 starting at 10:30 am. The event will take place all day with the first 100 swimmers receiving a special edition Aquatic Center bag full of safety swim items such as sunglasses and sunscreen. Prizes, such as swim lessons and season passes, will be given out throughout the day.
We want to encourage everyone to come out and not only celebrate but also learn about the dangers and the safety precautions people need to take when theyre around water, said the Assistant City Manager for Administration, Chris McCartt. McCartt oversees the Kingsport Aquatic Center.
The Aquatic Center staff will host water safety demonstrations and assist individuals and families with water safety issues. Mini swim classes will be held to help parents determine which swim lesson level their children are currently able to participate. Lifeguards will be available to answer questions and discuss pool etiquette and safety.
Learning to swim at an early age is very important, stated Aquatic Center Director Kari Matheney. Children are much safer around water if they know water safety rules and the basics of swimming. It could save their life.
The entire month of May is dedicated to education about water safety and Governor Haslam has supported this initiative with an official proclamation. It helps bring attention to the fact that drowning is the third leading cause of injury-related death among children 19 years and under. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, every day about 10 people die from unintentional drowning. The main factor that contributes to drowning is lack of swimming ability.
If you or your child are interested in swimming, consider enrolling in the swim lesson program offered at the Kingsport Aquatic Center. Please call 423-343-9758 for more information or talk to any of Aquatic Center staff.
