On Friday, January 18th, the city of Kingsport will unveil the signage on one of the city’s major streets, that will further honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On that date, Lincoln Street, from Wilcox Drive to the John B. Dennis Bypass, will be designated the “Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Parkway.” This is a unique and special designation by Kingsport, (two parts of it in particular) that most people do not know about yet, given the number of streets and roads around the country that honor the civil rights leader. What makes it very special, will be noted during the ceremony.
The new street designation is also distinctive, in that it falls just 3 days after what would have been Dr. King’s 90th birthday.
All city government employees, Mayor Clark, the Kingsport City Aldermen, and all residents of the Model City are invited to join in this joyous celebration, that also kicks off the 3-day celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 21, 2019.
The sign unveiling will be at Noon on Friday, January 18, 2019. The location will be on Lincoln Street, just past Wilcox Drive beside the Eastman Credit Union. The street will be blocked off. Participants are asked to assemble at 11:45 AM, as the ceremony will begin promptly at Noon.
