The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is blasting into the e-Sports scene by offering a special one-day tournament later this month with participants competing in the highly popular games of Fortnite and Rocket League.
The tournament will take place on November 16 at the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex (301 Louis Street) and is open for players ages 7 and up. The entry fee is $10 per player and players will compete on the Playstation 5 and XBOX Series X.
The Rocket League tournament will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Fortnite tournament will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Rocket League will be double elimination with random names drawn for matchups in the bracket. The Fortnite tournament will guarantee three games, taking the total points from eliminations, placement, and wins to determine the winner.

“We’re excited to offer this tournament to the video gaming community, especially since e-Sports and Twitch are extremely popular with teenagers and young adults,” said Program Coordinator Nate Williams. “Players of all ages take these games seriously, so we’re interested to see the level of competition that comes out for our tournaments.”

The Kingsport Carousel – one of the most unique attractions in the Tri-Cities – will celebrate its 10th birthday in 2025. Therefore, Kingsport Cultural Arts (KCA) and Engage Kingsport are pleased to announce a special sponsorship opportunity to the community to help celebrate this milestone event.
KCA and Engage Kingsport are bringing back the G.O.A.T. energy by offering six fiberglass carousel horses to the community, where sponsors would paint and decorate to their liking and then have the works of art debut at the second annual Kingsport ARTS Festival.
The Kingsport ARTS Festival was a two-day event held this past April in downtown Kingsport, showcasing the best artists, musicians, performers and dancers from across the region. The festival included a parade with giant puppets, hand-made lanterns, projection artwork, an iron pour, glass blowing and Raku firing.
Next year’s Kingsport ARTS Festival – scheduled for May 3 – will include many of these same demonstrations and performances, along with activities for kids and adults, an art gallery crawl and the works of many skilled and innovative artists from across the region.
“The fiberglass goats were a huge success and are still a popular form of public art throughout the city. People still comment to me about seeing the goats on display,” said Special Events and Cultural Arts Manager Kristie Leonard. “This year, we’ve gone bigger with carousel horses and believe the community will be excited to see the results.”
Each fiberglass carousel horse will be cloaked in creativity, directed by a sponsor and executed by a local artist. After their premiere at the festival, the horses will be displayed throughout the community to provide entertainment and inspiration. Sponsorship funds will be used for special carousel projects to maintain and improve this beloved community space.
Each horse will need a sponsor (for $2,500), someone who is passionate about the arts and our Kingsport Carousel. Please consider sponsoring this unique, fun, festive and creative public art effort.
What do I get for a $2500 fiberglass carousel horse sponsorship?
- Ownership of the horse sculpture, with the option to donate it back to Engage Kingsport.
- The choice of who will paint the horse is up to the sponsor. Kingsport Cultural Arts will provide a list if requested. Painters must follow the guidelines of the project (listed below).
- Each horse may have a placard with its name and sponsor included.
- Each sponsor will be highly recognized in marketing for the project, including, but not limited to, being recognized with the horses at the Kingsport ARTS Festival and the Carousel’s 10th Birthday Party.
- Each horse, by signed agreement, may be on display from the Kingsport ARTS Festival on May 3rd, 2025, and through late November 2025. Engage Kingsport may request to keep the horses on display longer with permission from their sponsor. At the conclusion of the display period, sponsors must either take possession of their horse or donate it back to Engage Kingsport.
Horse painting guidelines:
- Each horse needs to be painted or decorated.
- The horse can be painted/decorated as the sponsor see fits with either abstract or realistic symbolism or design.
- All decorations or paint should be secured to the horse so that nothing falls or flakes off.
- No decorations should leave sharp edges of any kind.
- All décor/paint should be both indoor/outdoor materials.
- All designs must be approved by the Public Art Committee as Public Art for the City of Kingsport. Sponsors must submit a mockup of the design for approval by January 1, 2025.

On October 24th, 2024, at approximately 7:45 am, Joseph Allen Brickey II was reported to the Kingsport Police Department as a missing person by his daughter. Brickey was last seen on October 21st, 2024, and is believed to be traveling in 2018 silver Nissan Frontier, Virginia License plate #TXW7238.
Brickey is a 55-year-old white male who stands approximately 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 220 pounds. Brickey has brown hair and blue eyes.
Anyone with information on Brickey’s current whereabouts is asked to contact Kingsport Central Dispatch at (423) 246-9111 or the Criminal Investigations Division at (423) 229-9429.

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department is offering a special one-day children’s camp next week. The camp will be held on the same day as a Kingsport City Schools’ parent/teacher conference day.
Meaning, while parents meet with teachers, their children can attend a fun-filled day of games and activities.
The one-day camp will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on November 5 at the V.O. Dobbins, Sr. Complex (301 Louis Street).
The cost per child is $10 and the camp is open for ages 6 to 12. The maximum number of registrants is 50. Participants will need to bring a lunch and snack. Walk-ups will be accepted on the day of the camp.
The day’s activities will be similar to those found during the normal, summer camp program – video games, dodgeball, basketball, kickball, coloring, puzzles, board and card games, crafts and more.

SUBJECT: KPD Investigating Fatal Vehicle Crash on Wilcox Dr.

GENERAL NARRATIVE
On 10/25/2024, at approximately 2:41 pm, Kingsport Police Officers responded to a crash with injuries in the 1100 block of S. Wilcox Drive. Investigating officers determined that a blue 2018 Toyota 4runner (Vehicle 2), operated by Cari Coates of Kingsport and occupied by Jessica Coates of Kingsport, was traveling southbound on S. Wilcox Drive. A maroon 2011 Honda CRV (Vehicle 1), operated by Autumn S. Watts of Kingsport, and occupied by a juvenile, entered traffic on W. Wilcox Drive from the Roadrunner Gas Station when it struck the passenger side of Vehicle #2, causing Vehicle #2 to overturn.
The driver of Toyota 4runner, Cari Coates, and her passenger , Jessica Coates, were not wearing seat belts and both were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
The driver of the Honda CRV, Autumn Watts, did not have apparent injury from the crash. The Juvenile passenger suffered non-life-threatening injury.
Both occupants of the Toyota 4runner were transported to local hospitals for series injuries. The driver, Cari Coates, was pronounced dead at the Johnson City Medical Center.
This is still an active and ongoing investigation.

The Kingsport Senior Center will be hosting its annual Old-Fashioned Christmas Fair on Nov. 22-23 at the Kingsport Renaissance Center.
Now in its fifth year, the two day event will feature the works of more than 65 crafters from across the region. Come out and browse through a variety of home-made crafts, including baskets, greeting cards, woodworking items, hand-sewn and crocheted items and much, much more.
The free event will take place on the first floor of the Kingsport Renaissance Center (1200 E. Center Street) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on November 22 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 23.
“This event has been one of our more popular holiday events, where folks can come out and find the perfect, locally made personal gift,” said Senior Center Director Shirley Buchanan. “We’re certain the Old Fashioned Christmas Fair will get you in the holiday spirit. We hope you’ll join us.”

The Kingsport Office of Cultural Arts is offering a class in advanced wire wrapping next month. In this hands-on class, you will learn the advanced techniques to create beautiful wire wrap jewelry from master wire sculpture artist Russell Lawson.
This class will focus on stone setting, with your choice of advanced techniques. Build upon your skill set from the introductory course and learn to make advanced level “fancy” jewelry, such as cabochon wraps, chainmail, crochet and macramé.
The Advanced Wire Wrapping class will take place on November 10 in Room 228 of the Kingsport Renaissance Center (1200 E. Center Street). The class runs from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The cost is $70 per person and includes all materials. Participants are allowed to bring their own tools. Pre-requisite – the introduction to wire wrapping class or previous experience with jewelry making.
