KINGSPORT – The City of Kingsport is pleased to announce Heather Cook as the Director of Marketing & Public Relations. She will join the Citys Leadership Team on October 12th Cook will be responsible for marketing & promoting a broad range of City programs, services, issues, and policies to the community, all designed to ensure that retention and attraction objectives are achieved with residents, businesses and visitors.
We are at a critical juncture, said Jeff Fleming, City Manager. Weve borne witness to the amazing transformation of our city in the past 15 years, but we cant rest too long. If we do, others will pass us by. Whats the next big idea? We hope the upcoming Summit will answer that question, he added.
Im pleased that this position has been filled as we kick off the OneKingsport Summit, said Mayor John Clark. Kingsport has incredible assets and I look forward to a focused, dedicated marketing initiative so our community can achieve its full potential.
Heather is a well-known figure in the community with 12 years of marketing experience at Northeast State, ETSU, Kingsport Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Bristol Motor Speedway. Most recently she successfully guided the launch of Healthy Kingsport.
Cook led the Northeast State Foundation to a growth in staff donations from $23,000 to $210,000 in 3 years. At KCVB, she grew advertising sales by 50%. During her time at Healthy Kingsport, she implemented a walking program that exceeded its goal by 660%.
Heather was one of two invited to address statewide media regarding the Healthier Tennessee initiative. After being introduced by the Governor, her remarks were poised & poignant while he stood at her side. She was unflappable. She represented our community well that day and Im confident she will do so in the future, Fleming said.
Cook was the first-ever graduate of the Roan Scholars Leadership Program at East Tennessee State University. She earned a degree in Business Administration, Integrated Marketing Communication. She also holds two advanced degrees from ETSU — an MBA and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership & Policy. She graduated summa cum laude in all three degree programs.
She is also an active community volunteer, serving as Vice Chair of the Kingsport Regional Planning Commission, a member of the Rotary Club, and a vision council for United Way. She also coaches drum majors for the award-winning Dobyns-Bennett band.
Cook fills the vacancy created by Tim Whaley who departed June 1. The position drew 130 applicants. Seven finalists were interviewed. We were very pleased with the level of interest in the position, Fleming said. Any of the top seven had the technical ability, but Heather is the best fit for our organization.
KINGSPORT – The Painterly Printmakers Show is a wonderful exhibition of art by four local artists, and longtime members of Kingsport Art Guild: Kathy Hawk, April Jordan and Jane Moein. The Painterly Printmakers Art Show will be featured at the Kingsport City Hall Gallery in September and October 2015. City Hall Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM. City Hall Gallery is located at 225 W. Center Street, Kingsport TN.
The Painterly Printmakers Art Show features monotypes from three artists and their various approaches to this fascinating art form that began in the 1600s and continues to today. They all began monotypes about ten years ago and continue to evolve. Monotype is a cross between painting and printmaking in which the artist paints or brayers ink onto a plastic plate known as PETG, places paper over it and runs the two through the printing press to create a “one-of-a kind” image.
A former calligrapher, Hawk takes her monotypes a step further by usually collaging them together, adding colored pencil or pastels thus frequently creating mixed media works. She is a former art educator, current board member and past president of the Kingsport Art Guild. Frequently exhibiting in area shows, she has work in private collections throughout the USA. Jordan trained as an accountant, but has always been an artist having been inspired by her father who was an amateur artist. As a former Art Guild board member she continues to study monotypes. Jordan creates monotypes on the plate often using her original stencils, plant life, or strictly with the brayer. The uniqueness, variety of techniques and the element of surprise make monotype printing her preferred art form. Moein has lived in several states and is a former educator teaching science and art. The creative surprise in every monotype has made it a favorite media where she often expresses her love of nature. She uses plant life, collage and her unique methods into her prints. All three artists are prize winners in area shows.

The Kingsport Police Department is continuing to search for Eugene Marshall, an elderly Kingsport man with Alzheimer’s Disease. All law enforcement agencies across the United States have been alerted of his status as a missing/endangered person.
A full-scale, organized, search was conducted on September 23, 2015 to no avail. Numerous public safety organization and dozens of community volunteers assisted in searching the area surrounding several confirmed and unconfirmed sightings of Mr. Marshall since his disappearance. He could be anywhere in the Kingsport area; however, he could just as easily have hitched a ride out of town and be in another jurisdiction altogether. Citizen tips have poured in since his disappearance. Detectives with the K.P.D. Criminal Investigations Division are continuing to investigate his whereabouts and follow up on all tips and leads. K.P.D. Patrol Officers are on constant lookout for him as well. Citizens are also asked to check any barns, utility sheds, abandoned buildings, fields, or wooded areas on their property for Mr. Marshall. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a tan button-up shirt, and white athletic shoes. He often dresses in layers, so it is possible that he might be wearing a blue button-up shirt also.
