PSAT Registration To Be Held at Dobyns-Bennett High School

KINGSPORT – Students interested in taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) will have an opportunity to register for an upcoming test to be held at Dobyns-Bennett High School.

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The standardized test provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also provides students with a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools. The test is typically taken by 11th graders, but may be taken by younger students.

Dobyns-Bennett students may register for the PSAT beginning Tuesday, September 7 until noon on Friday, October 1 in the Dobyns-Bennett Activities Office. Space is limited and registration is on a first come, first serve basis. The PSAT test fee is $18 for Kingsport City School students.

Students who do not attend Dobyns-Bennett High school may register for the test beginning Monday, September 27 until noon on Friday, October 1 in the Dobyns-Bennett Activities Office. The test fee for non-KCS students is $21.

The PSAT will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 8 a.m. at Dobyns-Bennett High School. No refunds will be provided to those who have registered, but do not take the test.

Sullivan County Conservation Camp for 4th Graders Set For September 7-9

KINGSPORT ‚¬ Nearly 900 fourth grade students from Sullivan County schools, including the City of Bristol and the City of Kingsport, will attend the annual Sullivan County Conservation Camp held September 7, 8 and 9 at Warriors Path State Park.

Keep Bristol Beautiful, Keep Kingsport Beautiful, Sullivan County Department of Education and Sullivan County Recycling Department sponsor the event each year, with assistance from Warriors Path State Park and Waste Management.

Conservation Camp introduces students to a variety of environmental learning activities. Students will rotate through 12 stations, ranging in topics from Industrys Role in Conservation, presented by Eastman Chemical Company, to Creepy Crawlies, presented by Hands On! Museum in Johnson City. The staff at Bays Mountain Park will also be in attendance with Yoda, the screech owl.

Volunteer presenters from various agencies, companies and organizations provide the educational programming for Conservation Camp. Teachers are provided a booklet with the presenters information in order to contact them for a detailed classroom presentation.

Conservation Camp will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day in the overflow campground at Warriors Path State Park. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to the recreation building on Duck Island at Warriors Path State Park.

Keep Kingsport Beautiful is a cooperative program between the City of Kingsport and the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce. An affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, the program has won more than 60 state, regional and national awards.

Deadline Extended for Kingsport Fire Department’s Citizens Fire Academy until Monday September 6th

The Kingsport Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy will run from Thursday evenings September 16th through November 4th.

The Kingsport Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy will culminate with a Graduation Dinner at Station 1 featuring a Fire Fighter Meal.‚  Each participant who completes the Academy will receive a commemorative certificate and a golf shirt proudly displaying their accomplishment as a Kingsport Fire Department Citizens Fire Academy Graduate.

The Citizens Fire Academy is an eight week class dedicated to increasing public awareness through education, demonstration, and participation by the class members creating a safer home and work environment through fire prevention, extinguishment techniques, and training.

Due to the class size limitations (15) and number of requests, all participant requests may not be granted. Due to the physical nature of some classes, some members may want to consult a physician before participating. Participants must be at least 18 years of age. Participants must complete the Citizens Fire Academy request to Participate Form and return it before 5 p.m. Monday September 6th, 2010. Ride along release forms will be available for completion at the first class session.
