Greer Named National Distinguished Principal
KINGSPORT – John Sevier Middle School Principal Cookie Greer has been named Tennessee’s 2010 National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
The National Distinguished Principals program recognizes an elementary and middle school level principal from each state and the District of Columbia, as well as administrators from private and overseas schools. The program is designed to recognize the outstanding leadership of school principals, honoring their commitment to students and staff, service to their community and contributions to the overall profession, including their professional associations.
Greer is serving her 12th year as a principal in Kingsport City Schools. She formerly served as the principal of George Washington Elementary School for eleven years prior to serving as principal of John Sevier Middle School in 2009-10. She is a former teacher at Andrew Johnson Elementary and John Sevier Middle School and was the owner/director of the Oak Forest Montessori School in Longview Texas prior to moving to Kingsport.
During Greer’s tenure at Washington Elementary, the school received the 2001 U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence, was named a 2005 Scholastic-Intel School of Distinction and was recognized as a 2005 Blue Ribbon Lighthouse School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Louisiana Tech University and a Master of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. She also received her administrator’s credentials from East Tennessee State University in 1994.
“This is an extremely humbling experience,” said Greer. “Anything that I have accomplished as a school leader is a direct result of the phenomenal teachers, staff, students, families, and colleagues with whom I have had the privilege to work."
“This is an outstanding accomplishment for Ms. Greer and for Kingsport City Schools. We applaud her leadership and dedication to her students and staff; we are fortunate that she is a part of our school leadership team,” said Dr. Richard Kitzmiller, Superintendent of Schools.
