KINGSPORT - The Kingsport Carousel Project of Engage Kingsport and the City of Kingsport Office of Cultural Arts announce a call to artists for work on 24 bird paintings for the Carousel. The paintings will be done on 15-inch diameter disks of plywood covered with artist canvas.
Finished paintings will be mounted on the carousel’s upper inside panels that surround the center pole, motor, etc. Each of the twelve inside panels will have two bird paintings for a total of 24.
Artists interested in painting one of the birds are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on Monday, August 12, 2013 at 11:30 AM in room 239 of the Renaissance Arts Center.
Lead artist for the Bird Paintings is local artist Joanne McDonough. Selected artists will be asked to pay a materials and instruction fee of $25.00.
Below is a list of birds common to Kingsport that are not only ornate/recognizable but also compliment the promotion of the Kingsport Birding Trail as these same birds have been chosen to represent a sample of Kingsport’s avian diversity in the KBT informational material.

The Carousel Project is a volunteer-led effort to produce hand-carved, hand-painted animals and install them on a working vintage 1956 Allan Herschell carousel. Successful fundraising to date has the Carousel on track for completion in early summer 2014 at the Kingsport Farmers Market site. The public is invited to participate in ‘Campaign 2014’ which will help to refurbish our 1956 Alan Herschell machine and build a gift shop connected to the Pal’s Roundhouse which will house the beautiful carousel.
‘Campaign 2014’ encourages the public to donate $100 and receive 6 ‘First Rider’ tickets. They are available at Able Printers, Blue Ridge Property offices (all 3 locations), the Carousel Carving Studio (2nd floor, Lynn View Community Center), the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Kingsport Association and the Kingsport Office of Cultural Arts located on the second floor of the Renaissance Center.
